Request Fields

The model field selects the answer tier. It is optional — an absent or unrecognized value falls back to seltz-base.

`messages`	array	Yes	Array of `{ role, content }`. `role` is one of `system`, `user`, or `assistant`. `content` is a string or an array of content parts — text parts are concatenated in order; image/audio parts are silently dropped (text-only grounding). At least one `user` message is required.
`model`	string	No	Selects the answer tier: `seltz-base` (default) or `seltz-pro`. An absent or unrecognized value falls back to `seltz-base`.
`stream`	boolean	No	Stream `chat.completion.chunk` SSE events terminated by `data: [DONE]`. Default: `false` (one buffered `chat.completion` object).
`response_format`	object	No	Passthrough. `{"type":"json_object"}` or `{"type":"json_schema", ...}` enable JSON output. Default: text.
`include_content`	boolean	No	Seltz extension. Include each cited source’s `content` text in `citations[]`. Default: `false`.
`scope`	string	No	Seltz extension. Route the grounding search to a specific vertical: `news`, `wikipedia`, `people`, or `companies`. Default: `news`.

Response

A buffered response is a chat.completion object with exactly one choices entry (index: 0).

id has the form chatcmpl-<uuid>.
citations is a top-level Seltz extension. It is always present, and is [] when search returned no URL-bearing sources. Each entry always has url; content appears only when include_content is true, and is omitted when the source has no fetched content.

There is no usage field on the response.

Errors

Errors use the OpenAI-shaped envelope. The status codes below apply to non-streaming requests only: when stream: true, every error is returned as an SSE error frame under HTTP 200. See Streaming.

400	`invalid_request_error`	No user message; empty or whitespace query; query larger than 8 KiB (`MAX_QUERY_BYTES`, measured on trimmed content); malformed `response_format` (rejected pre-auth — no billing, no search); empty `messages`; unparseable body; unsupported role; more than one `system` message, or a `system` message not at index 0; `system` message larger than 8 KiB.
401	`authentication_error`	Invalid or missing API key.
402	`insufficient_quota`	Account quota exhausted.
403	`permission_error`	Key not permitted for this endpoint.
404	`not_found_error`	Resource not found.
408	`timeout`	Upstream timed out.
413	—	Request body exceeds the per-route cap. Rejected before parsing, so the body is plain text, not the JSON envelope.
429	`rate_limit_error`	Too many requests. Retry with backoff.
500	`api_error`	Internal error.
502	`api_error`	Upstream unavailable. Retry with backoff.
